The Extreme Heat of Phoenix Summer is Coming!
The Salvation Army is enlisting community partners, like CUBEX, for the 2019 Heat Relief Water Drive. This program supports the Extreme Heat Emergency Plan throughout the Valley of the Sun, when high temperatures are severely dangerous. The focus of this program is to collect cases of standardized 16.9-ounce water bottles and provide hydration, respite, and safety information to anyone in need. Team up this May for this historically successful drive.
Extreme Heat Emergency Plan:
When the maximum heat index reaches hazardous levels, the National Weather Service issues an EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING for the area. Last year, there were 16 days of excessive heat warnings in the Valley. According to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, there were 66 confirmed heat-associated deaths in 2018, with 128 cases still under investigation.
The Salvation Army, Maricopa Association of Governments, City of Phoenix, first responders and other service agencies all play an important role in providing heat relief to our communities. During an Excessive Heat Warning, The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services team activates air-conditioned heat relief stations and mobile hydration units to provide cooling and bottled water for anyone in need. Safety information on how to stay hydrated, recognize heat stroke symptoms, and avoid extreme conditions are also available.
Last year, The Salvation Army served tens of thousands of individuals through this program and provided several other partnered agencies with vital supplies to help maintain heat relief efforts across the Valley. This year's donations will go to our neighbors at The Salvation Army Phoenix Family Services Office, less than 3 miles from Cubex HQ.
